Several years ago a group of four engineers in the Bay Area wondered if they could build a small self-driving car using the chassis of an RC race car and Raspberry Pi. They met and got some basic functions working using parts for around $300.

The next month they met again and invited their friends. Each month the size of the group doubled until now they have over 2,500 people in their “DonkeyCar” club. Now there are DonkeyCar clubs around the world that share their Open Source software.

In this talk we will talk about the DonkeyCar movement and our local attempts to create a fun machine learning curriculum around of these events. We will talk about the concepts we hope to teach and the challenges of making these materials accessible to high-school students and even non-technical product managers in your organization.

About Dan: Dan McCreary is a Distinguished Engineer that works for Optum’s Advanced Technology Collaborative. His focus is knowledge representation for AI. He is a big fan of graph databases and machine learning. He has been volunteer mentor teaching Arduino and robotics through the CoderDojo program for the last five years. His goal is to help build world-class AI and robotics programs in local colleges and high schools.
