How is AI driving Precision Agriculture?
For a farmer these days, there is no shortage of having access to ample data sources. Whether it's soil, weather, yield maps, aerial imagery, or some other sophisticated sensor, the datasets are plenty. There is no shortage of agronomic problems that farmers are dealing with either - from disease to weeds, insects, fertility, or sustainability. Because problems are largely driven by weather, no two years are quite the same, which makes the use of AI in agriculture a rather unique case. Tyler will share some of the challenges and opportunities of leveraging these datasets to provide practical insights that help farmers make smarter farm management decisions. In addition to high-level ideas, Tyler will present some of his cutting edge research on the use of hyperspectral imaging to monitor early season nutrient status in corn.
About Tyler Nigon
Tyler is a PhD Candidate in Land and Atmospheric Science at the University of Minnesota’s Department of Soil, Water, and Climate. Tyler is passionate about sustainable agricultural productivity. His research focuses on evaluating remote sensing and other precision agriculture tools to reduce fertilizer loss to keep our soil and water resources clean and productive.
Tyler grew up on a diversified dairy farm in Wisconsin that his parents still own and operate. In addition to milking cows, they crop around 900 acres (corn, soybean, wheat, and alfalfa), and grow some vegetables to sell on a roadside stand (https://www.facebook.com/nigonviewdairy/).
Tyler recently co-founded Insight Sensing (together with a fellow PhD candidate at the U) as part of the National Science Foundation Small Business Technology Transfer program. Insight Sensing is focused on using novel AI solutions to generate insights for nitrogen fertilizer management that help farmers manage the variability found within their fields for profitable, yet environmentally responsible outcomes.
