13. MeetUp AR/VR/MR: Collaboration in XR

Details

As decided by our community, we'll take a look at "Collaboration in XR" in our 13th MeetUp. We will invite experts working in this field to talk about their work.

Until now, a majority of XR solutions offer experiences for one single individual. With VR-gaming being the big exception. With the current advancements in AR Cloud solutions and improvements in endpoint connectivity (Fiber, 5G, Streaming), shared XR experiences are becoming possible.
With the increased use of XR in a business context, there is growing demand for solutions that enable employees to collaborate efficiently. Regardless of whether they are in the same room or whether the product prototype is a CAD sketch and has not yet been produced.

In this Meetup we'll take a look at how we will collaborate in the future with XR and what is already possible now.

Input 1:

⭐ Dr. Thomas Ryser
Project Manager, Collaboration Researcher FHNW
⭐ Louis Baumgartner
Research Assistant FHNW
FHNW: «Digital Collaboration Hubs for Spatial Planning and Design Teams»
From a technological perspective, Mixed Reality opens new potentials for collaborative work especially with respect to the joint viewing, manipulation, and creation of 3D objects. The research focus in this transdisciplinary InnoSuisse project is on creating collaborative Mixed Reality solutions for distributed teamwork. A requirements analysis will explore the critical design factors for collaboration hubs. Based on these findings, prototypes are going to be developed and will be evaluated in business contexts.

Input 2:

⭐ Dr. Romana Rust
Senior Researcher & Co-Lead Immersive Design Lab ETHZ
⭐ Dr. Michael Anton Kraus
Senior Researcher & Co-Lead Immersive Design Lab ETHZ
ETH Zürich: «Immersive Design Lab at the Center for Augmented Computational Design in Architecture, Engineering and Construction»
The Immersive Design Lab (IDL) is an interdisciplinary laboratory at ETH Zurich researching the future of design, architecture and engineering (AEC). The IDL creates an unprecedented platform for collaborative research and teaching in the rapidly evolving field of interactive extended reality and machine learning in architecture and civil engineering. It enables real time interaction with virtual design and engineering models and provides a human-computer interface for design, verifcation and fabrication. Leveraging recent advances in both real-time image and sound rendering, the IDL fuses visualization with 3D spatial audio.

We'll do the event-moderation in English, while our experts will give their inputs in English and standard German.

COVID-19 information: The large Galaxy Hall in the INNOSpace provides enough space for socializing at a distance. Nevertheless, we have to limit the maximum number of participants. Also, we'll comply with the recommendations and measures of the BAG. Please mask up and come vaccinated, recovered or tested.

This MeetUp is sponsored by INNOArchitects AG in the INNOSpace and the association ActionJam, the largest network for innovation of large companies in Switzerland!
