Over the Mountains of Marão

Introduction

This time around, we want to go to the outer limits of the district of Porto. It’s a trail of immense beauty on the most luxuriant slopes of the mountains of Marão, the physical division between the historical regions Douro Litoral and Trás-os-Montes.

We try to make the experience as diverse as possible, so you can expect the usual impeded views of over landscape, following up old water runnels, the former tin and tungsten mines of Ramalhoso as well as a trout nursery, among other quaint features. Furthermore, those slopes will be covered in broom and heather, gold and purple to frame the way.

This is an official trail, (you can look it up as PR6 AMT)It is one of the most suitable trails for summertime, as it keeps us in the shade over large sections. Afterwards, the usual round of drinks and refreshments to allow the whole experience to sink in as well as a little visit to the charming town of Amarante.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION (do not skim over this section):

Technical Level: Advanced Beginner to Moderate, for someone who already had contact with nature and knows what to expect of a hike. There are no big challenges to overcome, the route is very well signalled and laid on country tracks and footpaths, so, expect roots, leaves and other minor obstacles. Here, a trekking pole might come in hand if you’re not used to going on gallivanting around mountains and hills. Having said it, this should not be your first contact with a hike.

Stamina Level: Moderate - Fit : 14/15km (about 9 miles) in a loop, with a steady ascent with about 600m / 1968ft of positive gain.

Price €45 / person (includes door-to-door transportation, drive to the locations (and back) guide fees and refreshments at the end of the tour.

How do I sign up for the tour? Because seats are extremely limited, RSVP-ing alone is not enough, we'll have to insist on advance payment, only that will secure a place. As our capabilities are not limitless, (quite the opposite), the first ones to do it will have ensured their presence.

Do we always go no matter what? If the weather turns foul, (extreme heat or rain) for safety reasons, we will not set out and you will be fully reimbursed.
What if I need to cancel? If you need to cancel, let me know up to 36 hours prior and you will be fully reimbursed.

What to bring, well, water (at least 1,5L), sturdy footwear, adequate clothes, with a good sole, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and, of course, a good snack.
