Picketpost Deep Dive Area Exploration/Car Camp/Training Opportunity
Details
I will be car camping for two nights and exploring the Picketpost Mountain area. Proximity to Phoenix and easy access lend themselves to people choosing their own adventure. You could come for the whole thing, or just camp one night, or drive in and treat one of the days as a day hike.
February 22 Arrive in the evening to find a good spot along Uno Trail to car camp over night.
February 23 Picketpost Loop - 14.4 miles w/ 1600 ft elevation gain, rated strenuous on Onx: https://webmap.onxmaps.com/backcountry/map/hike-route/1mzjryn516d7?link_id=01KFKDNSCQHJ1R0T7E5NV81S7G
We'll have an 8 am hike time and wind up back at the cars so there's no need to carry more than a day pack unless you want to take this as a training opportunity and go heavy. If there's a big speed difference between day packers and heavies, we can split into multiple groups and meet back up at the end of the day.
February 24 Picketpost Mountain Trail - 4.1 miles w/ 2450 ft elevation gain, rated moderate on Onx: https://webmap.onxmaps.com/backcountry/map/hike-route/jy368yy9nqgm?link_id=01KFKDVAPA3MRN1XZQBF121P59
Another 8 am start time for this one, and same energy re: pack weight and hike speed.
After Picketpost Mountain Trail, head back home. No fees or permits or anything for this area. If you are able to bring a few dollars for ABC I will pass those along to group leadership. At the time of this post, there's construction on the 60 Tuesdays through Thursdays every week around Superior. That shouldn't interfere with access on these dates or at this location but it's something to be aware of in the area: http://www.az511.com/region/all
I'm excited to explore this mountain close to Phoenix! I've never done these trails before, so I won't be your guide, just your hiking buddy. We'll all look out for each other for sure, and also:
