July 4th Weekend in CO 🏔️✨
Details
Here Ye' Here Ye'!
There has been a MAJOR Trip change!
After extensive research, I have come to realize I chose a route that was more challenging than I was willing to lead a group of people up. I happen to accidently select some of the hardest 14ers to scramble in the entire state, so our plans are diverting.
This trip is still located in the San Juan Mountains, however is becoming a backpacking trip to Ice Lake & Island Lake. Please see route information below:
https://www.hikingproject.com/trail/7113718/ice-lake-island-lake-hike
Plans have become slightly different as well.
Wednesday, July 1st: I am going to be camping at TARGET TREE CAMPGROUND located near Durango, CO. I have reserved site 25, and have room for 1 more vehicle. Those who wish to participate in Thursday's adventures: I highly recommend a campsite here. Please reach out to me directly if you would like to split the campsite.

Thursday, July 2nd: Take off time no LATER than 7a.
Time to climb a VIA FERATTA! Arrival is approx. 9-10a. Stoked on this one, but please read the information from the website to understand what you are willing to get yourself into. I am going to climb the UNGUIDED "Upstream Route". This route is designed for experienced climbers and should not be attempted if you are unwilling to climb rungs of 5,000 linear feet. The "Downstream Route" is less intense, but should be taken into equal consideration. There is also an option on the Website to travel with a guide, but that will not be my option, so I suggest you discuss that with others who may be interested. My goal is to complete this in approximately 3 hours. Please read ALL INFORMATION located on their website. This is a One-Way route, know your limits.

I will also be stopping here first for gear rental (This is REQUIRED):

Once done, The goal is to acquire some dispersed camping along FS 585. The primary goal will be to group up, as this area will more than likely be congested. My anticipated time of arrival to camp is between 2-3p.
These dispersed campsites include:
Kendall Campsite
Anvil Campsite
Sultan Campsite
Golden Horn Campsite
7 additional sites from miles 1.4 - 4.6
Friday, July 3rd: TAKE OFF TIME IS EARLY AF - LEAVING BY 6:30A.
From my research, Ice Lakes is BUSY. Please take this into consideration when confirming your interests for this trip. Busy enough that we will see people all day, and will not have a "quiet" camp spot. However, the views are 100% worth it. In Leu of this: We are leaving the campground area by 6:30a in order to try and find parking before 7a.
Day 1: Plan on Hiking to Lower Ice Lakes Basin. This is approximately 3.5 miles, with almost 2K ft of elevation change. Here we will set up camp, and then continue on. From there, we break down into Daypacks, and hike to Upper Ice Lakes and the less popular Fuller Lake. We can also hike around the entire Upper Ice Lake. This will be an approximate 4 mile out-and-back Day hike, setting Day 1 up for a total of 7.5-8.5 miles and 3k ft elevation.
Saturday, July 4th: Day 2!
Lets get High AF! (Literally... like, hiking up to 13,315 ft). We'll head out for another Day Hike up top a 13k ft mountain, overlooking 4 Alpine Lakes. This portion is optional, and can be turned around at any time. If you would NOT like to participate on this portion, you will meet us at Island Lake, where we will continue on for a full loop, passing Upper Ice Lake basin again on our way back down to camp. This day will be approximately 6-7 miles.
Sunday, July 5th: Headin' out!
From Camp, we'll hike the 3.5 miles back to the car, and take the time driving back to AZ. I plan on stopping in Mesa Verde National Park, and others are HIGHLY encouraged to join in. Free with America The Beautiful Pass. $35 per car without.
Since this trip has the opportunity to be split in very different directions the first two days, I am asking you to please comment down below your planned travel/arrival day. I will also need to know what vehicle you will be in, and i HIGHLY encourage carpooling. As of right now, I currently have 1 confirmed carpool-mate and possibly have room for 1 more person. TBD.
As a reminder - Please consider a $2 donation to support the ABCs and continue insane trips like these.
And most important, please see waiver below :)
