Kitty Calhoun - Ambassador for POW (Protect Our Winters. www.crux.academy/pow), Patagonia, and Lion Energy presents:
Climbing and Climate: Last Ascents and Climate Justice -
Our speaker tonight will be alpinist, mountain guide and climate activist, Kitty Calhoun who will speak to her experiences as an activist and to highlight a project she is working on that includes fundraising for the Navajo reservation to provide clean energy kits to their households, as well as a film project to bring to light some of the climate injustices happening within the Navajo Nation.
“The mountains have been used as my classroom, where I developed as a person and went to find solace and answers. I believed I could always count on being able to retreat to the mountains, and they seemed to offer a sense of permanence as I was experiencing changes in my life. But on a trip to climb the Diamond Couloir, which had not seen an ascent in nine years, I realized that climate change had insidiously appeared and stripped it of much of the ice it once had. As alpinists, we are canaries in a coal mine- and we need to talk action before it is too late.”
The AMC welcomes the public to our member meetings. Although we like have RSVP's to keep track of numbers, if you have interest in this topic, but not in rock climbing, please just show up at North Mountain Visitor's Center for this event. We'd love to see you there!
