Multi-pitch Outing: Sven Tower III Right Rib (5.6)
Details
The climb:
This is a classic multi-pitch route in the McDowell Mountains, with nice granite and big views toward Fountain Hills and the Verde River. At about 5.6, it's a great introduction to multi-pitch for newer climbers.
(See Mountain Project description here: https://www.mountainproject.com/route/106852569/right-rib)
We'll climb the Right Rib, which will include a little slab, a little off-width, a little crack — plus the Chasm of Doom. Something for everyone!
Outing leader: Andrea Galyean
Assistant: Sabrina Dominguez
Attendees: Maximum six, including event leaders. Attendee list is at the sole discretion of event leaders. All attendees must be current members of AMC with a current waiver. If you need to join or renew, you may do that at https://www.arizonamountaineeringclub.org/membership
R.S.V.P. opens at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 13. You will not be able to register before that date and time.
When you sign up, you will be asked for full name and email to verify AMC membership. This information will be visible only to you and the outing leader. If you do not provide that information, you will be moved to "Not Going."
Meeting Location:
We will meet at the Tom's Thumb Trailhead (https://www.mcdowellsonoran.org/toms/), which offers restrooms but no water or other services.
Street address: 23015 N 128th St, Scottsdale, AZ 85255.
Please arrive early. We depart at 7 a.m. sharp.
Approach:
The approach hike is approximately 30 minutes of moderate hiking with steep and loose terrain near the top.
Climb:
The climb is three pitches, followed by a short rappel and then a five-minute scramble back to our packs at the base.
This is a group outing, not a guided tour. You are expected to be a responsible member of the team and will need to carry a rope and club gear.
Please bring: Harness, helmet, climbing shoes, belay/rappel device, autoblock, 6 carabiners (including at least 3 lockers), personal anchor, prusiks, food & water for a few hours, jacket/windbreaker, and a pack big enough to carry your gear plus a rope. You will need a way to carry your approach shoes on the climb, whether attached to your harness or in a small backpack.
Optional supplies: Belay/rappel gloves, small pack for carrying water and supplies on the climb, sunhat for hiking, emergency supplies, headlamp, phone/camera.
Skills needed: Basic climbing knots, basic climbing and rappelling skills, prusiking skills, climbing calls, ability to top-rope 5.7 outdoors or 5.8 in gym.
Notes: This is a popular route and we might have to wait for other climbing parties, so we cannot guarantee the end time. Please be flexible.
Do not sign up unless you are committed to attending. If you must cancel, do so early. No-shows and last-minute cancellations deprive other people of the opportunity to attend—and may affect your ability to get on future outings.
E-mail Andrea at andreagalyean@hotmail.com if you have any questions about this climb and/or whether it is for you.
