Lone Rock Campground at Lake Powell

Details

We did a similar trip this past spring but several people couldn't make it; others had to leave early due to their gear getting trashed by a storm. It was so much fun that I figured we'd run it back again and give people a second chance. It will be much warmer this time.

In the fall we will kayak Lake Powell. We will be camping at the Lone Rock campground. The cost is $14 per night. The campground has no facilities other than pit toilets. It is primitive camping on the beach. You can't reserve in advance but it's no problem because there is no limit as to how many people can camp there. Just down the road is the Wahweap camground where you can pay for showers.

How to find us: I drive a blue Ford F-150 with a solid (no windows) blue campershell. I'll be towing a 32 foot Imagine RV trailer. I shouldn't be too tough to spot so look for me there and set up camp nearby.

The plan is:

Monday, September 15:
Drive up to Lake Powell and set up camp. Perhaps go for a quick paddle in the late afternoon or evening.

Tuesday, September 16:
Put in to the lake near our campsite and paddle there for the day.

Wednesday, September 17:
Drive to Antelope Point and kayak into Antelope Canyon. After paddling for about 3 miles, we can beach the kayaks and hike farther into the canyon. This will be a long day with 6 miles of kayaking in addition to some hiking.

Thursday, September 18:
Kayak Horseshoe Bend. We will drive to Lee's Ferry where we will charter a boat to haul us and our kayaks up to the dam, above Horseshoe bend. From there we will kayak 16 miles downstream back to where we parked. This is also a long day as the paddle down the Colorado River will be nearly double the distance of our normal Salt River run.

This time we are going with the company: Kayaking the Colorado. Please go to their website and reserve your spot on their boat. Please reserve for 8:00 am until that boat is full. Once no more spots are left, you can make reservations for the 7:00 am or 9:00 am boats.

IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT that we fill the 8:00 am boat as soon as possible. If we fill it with no one but people from our group, then I get to bring my puppy along on the adventure. If someone else sneaks on before we fill it, I can't.

So, if you know you will be going on this trip, please reserve your spot on the boat as soon as possible.

Backhaul Taxi $80/Person + taxes and booking fee~

Friday, September 19:
Paddle near our campsite one more time.

Saturday, September 20:
Pack up and drive home.
