About us

The Association for Renaissance Martial Arts ( http://www.thearma.org) is an international organization dedicated to the study and practice of the martial arts of Renaissance Europe. Using source manuals written by the Renaissance masters themselves, we use historically accurate training tools to interpret and reconstruct the fighting skills of our Western heritage. ARMA has Study Groups all across the United States and in several countries around the world, including Mexico, South Korea, and Russia. Houston's Study Group was founded back in 1996 by ARMA Director and internationally renowned sword expert John Clements.

Students start by learning the core principles of fighting with the two-handed longsword, with the opportunity later to learn skills in other weapons including single sword, rapier, sword & buckler, sword & dagger, dagger, messer or dussack, quarterstaff, and unarmed combat grappling from instructors with up to 10 years of experience. Regional gatherings of Study Groups and special training seminars are held several times a year. We guarantee you will get lots of exercise and make lots of friends if you stay in this group for very long!

For more information on local practices, see our Study Group website:
