What do we actually believe about the environment, and how well do we understand the views we disagree with?

This meetup will explore environmental ethics through the lens of the Intellectual Turing Test. The goal is not just to argue for your position, but to understand opposing views so well that you can present them in their strongest possible form.

We will focus on questions like:

  • Does the environment itself have rights, or only the beings within it?
  • Do humans have direct obligations to nature, or only indirect ones?
  • Is caring for the environment a good in itself, or mainly a way of reducing suffering for sentient beings?

We will also run a few small experiments around the Intellectual Turing Test. If you have a strong stance, you will be encouraged to articulate the best possible version of the opposing view.

** Group guidelines**

  • All perspectives are welcome
  • Everyone has an opportunity to speak and listen
  • Dialogue is respectful and open
  • No prior philosophical knowledge required!
