Japanese Calligraphy - 'mask'

Details

This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.

### Mask: 面

In Japanese culture, the character 面 has a great significance. It symbolises the very surface of our face and carries a number of meanings: from the nuanced intricacies of facial expressions to the delicate artistry of masks and disguises. This kanji also serves as a mirror reflecting the richness and complexity of human expression, such as identity. Join us as we delve deeper into the cultural significance of 面, exploring its profound implications on language, humour, and the essence of being in Japanese society.
