A Guided Visit of a Few Things in the Whitney Biennial
Details
I am offering a guided tour of a few things in the Whitney Biennial (which closes on the 11th!)
Every time I go to a provocative exhibit, or see some great public art, I want to stop fellow onlookers and ask: "Are we seeing the same things?" Some people are willing to play, others are not, but maybe you are? Let us try this out.
I propose we meet at the Whitney, each buy our own tickets, and then I’ll initiate a walk & talk through parts of the Whitney Biennial, to look at, stand next to, and experience things made by other humans. I’ll encourage you to be playful, curious and adventurous. I will tell you what I know and what I intuit. I have my theories and questions, and maybe you will too. Some biggies I have: Why do people make the art they do? Why should we look at it? How does it relate to life? What do you do when it is freaky or rude? What does it owe us and what might we owe it? What happens when we leave the room?
Duration:
The tour will be about 2 hours. We will take a few “looking breaks" on the Whitney balconies on offer, and perhaps afterwards, finish nearby with some lemonade to say: “Whew that was enough for today!” or “Can we go back???”
What to Bring:
Yourself, and a sense of curiousity
Where to Meet:
Under the High Line at corner of Gansevoort St & Washington st. I'll have a silver flag.
Donations:
The tour is free, the Whitney is not. In the interest of supporting my research and preparations for our gathering, AND in welcoming those who have enthusiasm but not the means, I ask for donations from those who are willing and able ($20-$50/ person). If you want to come but the Whitney admission price is a hindrance, reach out to me, and hopefully donations from others will have set up a fund I can use to get you a ticket.
Who am I?
I am a visual artist and set designer, with a strong interest in collaboration and engagement with intentional and accidental audiences. I find the NYC art world both fascinating and complicated, welcoming and forbidding.
Other notes:
- This is a new experiment, and part of my interest is in being receptive to the group, so tangents may occur!
- The aim is to have fun, to look and wonder. I welcome all humans, all ages. Some of the art may be intense, so reach out to me if you have content concerns.
- You are encouraged to participate in our conversation. All questions and ideas are welcome.
AND
I am a covid conscious individual. Based on the sources I rely on, infection rates are up. So I wear a N95 respirator in indoor spaces, and will be doing so on this tour. You are not expected to, but I can bring extras if you would like one (I have some nice ones!). If you are hearing impaired, reach out to me and lets figure out how to make the best plan to accommodate.
