Letโs kick off the cultural season after the summer break with a meditative and thought-provoking exhibition by one of the masters of contemporary Japanese art: Kishio Suga.
For the eleventh event in our Great Exhibitions series โ where we visit some of the most intriguing exhibitions across the Netherlands โ weโll explore โWhere Both Sides Meetโ, the first-ever solo exhibition of Kishio Suga in the Netherlands, hosted at Cobra Museum in Amstelveen.
Suga (born 1944) is one of the key figures of Mono-ha, a Japanese art movement from the late 1960s that focuses on raw materials and their presence in space. His works consist of wood, stone, glass, and metal โ arranged into installations that enter into silent, powerful dialogues with the surroundings and the viewer. No fixed meanings. No didactic messages. Just pure objects, and our perception of them.
The Museum Cobra team collaborated directly with the artist (via livestream, due to his age) to install the works using natural materials found locally โ making this exhibition not only visually rich but site-specific and deeply grounded.
Expect a moment of calm and quiet balance, where thought, material, and presence converge. Itโs one of the most unique exhibitions of the season โ minimal yet impactful.

๐ธ After the visit
Weโll head to Naeckte Brouwers, a stunning craft brewery located inside a former church just a short walk from the museum. A chance to taste fresh local beers in an unforgettable setting and enjoy a good chat after the exhibition.
