🕢 Meetup: 19:30 at the LAB111 café
🎥 Screening: 20:30
For the next installment of Films to Watch, we’re going to LAB111 in Amsterdam to see the restored 4K version of one of the greatest modern classics of Asian cinema: Yi Yi by Edward Yang, winner of the Best Director award at Cannes in 2000.
We'll meet from 19:30 at the café of LAB111 (which also has a great beer selection), for a pre-film drink and chat. Since the movie starts at 20:30 and runs almost 3 hours, we’ll have drinks before and not after.
About the film:
Yi Yi is a tender and thoughtful mosaic of modern family life, following the Jian family in Taipei. As their grandmother lies in a coma, each family member navigates their own quiet personal struggles—first love, regret, professional doubts, and the attempt to understand life’s meaning through art and memory.
Filmed in a reflective, contemplative style—with many scenes shot through windows, mirrors, or from a distance—Edward Yang’s direction encourages you to observe, not judge. The result is a deeply moving experience about growing up, aging, and the invisible connections between people.
A rare chance to see this masterpiece on the big screen—don’t miss it!
