Watercolor is an incredibly versatile medium that can teach us a lot about the basics of art and painting: color (hue, value, saturation), brush application or mark-making, and the creation of balance within the composition. The unique characteristic of watercolor paint, which can go from very translucent (called a wash) to opaque, allows us to pay attention to and utilize the whiteness of the paper.

The workshop starts out with a warm-up of making a variety of marks on paper using methods like splattering, pulling color, the wet-on-wet technique, and more. Color theory will be introduced to inspire the theme or discuss the mood for the artwork. The host will provide you with valuable insights and open up your perspectives on looking at and developing a language in colors, lines, and forms. While painting guidance is given through demonstration with reference to important works by artists in history, the process of experimentation in mark-making is highly encouraged.

All materials are provided, such as watercolor papers, blank greeting cards and envelopes, watercolor paints and palettes, brushes, pipettes, tape, stencils, pencils, and tape. You are also encouraged to bring materials of your choosing.

No art experience is necessary, but the class can also benefit those with experience :) The class is open to all ages 5 and up. Class takes place in the air-conditioned indoors in the month of August.

You just may be surprised at how well the class can serve you as a space for self-care and discovery. Working alongside other artists will also open your eyes to how we can speak the common language of color in so many ways.

Note: You may take this class once or come back to build on your visual expression weekly, at a discounted price. The experienced host will be equipped with multitude of ideas to work with you, depending on how you would like to take the watercolor class further. The painting could be abstract or figurative, turned into a collage work, mixed with other types of drawing, and more. Feel free to contact her for any questions.
