It is a huge subject that will no doubt bring up many questions. As a starter it might be good to consider some of these questions discussion starters for the evening:-

How do contemporary African artists engage with the Euro/American based tradition? Does it matter that they do/don’t?
How do we with our Euro/ American history of art engage with art from somewhere completely different ?

How do we evaluate what is good?

What drives the surge of interest in African art in the UK — genuine cultural dialogue, art-world fashion cycles, or commercial gain?

How meaningful it is to talk about ‘African art’ as a single category, given the vast diversity of cultures and practices across the continent ?
A trip to Tate Modern to see the Nigerian Modernism exhibition is planned to follow.
