After a wonderful start to our new format AoDL meetup series a few weeks ago, we have been eagerly planning some new Summer instalments. The next meetup will take place on Friday 20 July, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, and it will explore the phenomenon of ‘Distributed Storytelling’.

Distributed or transmedia storytelling is a way of telling stories across multiple platforms, that creates individually distinct narratives, which remain related to a central story. Not to be confused with multimedia storytelling - more associated with broadcast and advertising - it employs social media to develop many levels of narrative around a piece of work. Through a feedback process between the audience, as participants, and the lead creators, successful distributed storytelling projects can help to deepen engagement, increase discussion and augment the collective understanding of the work.

For every AoDL event we are creating a research area (http://theknowledge.aodl.org.uk/index.php/Distributed_Storytelling) on our collaborative and open wiki platform, TheKnowledge (http://theknowledge.aodl.org.uk/index.php/Distributed_Storytelling), where research topics can be explored together to stimulate and increase shared understanding. As this is an open platform we encourage those who know a bit about the theme to create an account on the wiki and edit/add content. You can also mail caroline@metamute.org who will upload it for you.

The meetups are open to all and we would be delighted if you would pass this onto a friend or colleague who might be interested.

AoDL is a research programme and network that runs an online peer learning resource, regular public events, training sessions and meetings about digital strategy in culture. Over 2011 AoDL in partnership with The Photographers’ Gallery (http://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/) ran a series of successful discussion groups building on the thematics of its founding programme of Salons & Surgeries (http://theknowledge.aodl.org.uk/index.php/Digital_Salon_and_Surgeries) (2009-10).
