Living with Purpose: Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilych

In this workshop, we try to answer the question: "What makes life meaningful?" We will explore this question by reading Tolstoy’s famous short story “The Death of Ivan Ilych.” Ivan did everything that society, his friends and family expected of him, but during his fatal illness he questions whether his life was worth living. Ivan’s story invites us to explore important issues about work, love, friendship, and happiness, which in turn, direct us to the ultimate question about what it means to live a full human life. This workshop is not just about understanding what Tolstoy meant by the story, but what the story means to us and what questions we need to ask ourselves about how we live our lives. It will provide an open, honest and comfortable space for us to discuss these questions with the goal of finding answers that are tailored to our own life circumstances, while also creating strategies for integrating them into our everyday lives.
