KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Siena, the Rise of Painting 1300-1350, National Gallery

This is a truly magnificent exhibition about a little known period of art history, yet Siena in the first half of the 14th century - before the Black Death put an end to its great wealth and influence - was the birthplace of painting as we know it: transforming the static and formulaic Byzantine images of the Virgin and Child into gorgeous, jewel-like pictures brimming with animated figures, captivating story telling and unprecedented beauty
of design.

Join me for a detailed look at the four great Sienese artists of the period : Duccio, Simone Martini and the brothers Pietro and Ambroggio Lorenzetti
who made Siena into the great centre of art long before Florence and Venice eclipsed its importance during the Renaissance.
