Great Themes in Art 4: Animals
Details
Passcode: 938712
As living creatures, animals have an affinity to humans, which makes them an
emotive subject, whether seen in the context of human life, or separately.
They have the capacity to attract attention, thereby providing a useful focus of
meaning. Their emotions, when expressed through attitude or action, can be
compared to that of humans, thus providing an opportunity for parable. They
can also act as accessories for human activity, adding to the interest,
picturesqueness or humour of a painting. They bring up questions about their
treatment by - and of - humans.
Animals which artists choose to paint can be real or imagined. Common or
exotic. Each plays a part in enhancing the message in their own individual
way. we trace their appearance in paintings from the early Renaissance to the Surrealists in the 20th century.
