It is very rare for paintings depicting food or feasts even, to show the
actual act of eating. Instead, food mostly acquires a symbolic role.
Whether arranged in a still life form or forming part of an contemporary
or historic interior, it performs an allegorical, symbolic or moral role for
the benefit of the spectator. Rarely just an opportunity for show of
painterly skill, foodstuffs tell us of the eating habits of different social
strata, as well as playing a major role in the didactic function of a work of art.

From Christian imagery to Mythology and domestic scenes, we look at fruits and vegetables, bread and meat as they grace tables from the Renaissance to the 20th century.
