Hello ArtForward members:

I know some of you have been anxious about the next meeting. So I thought it would be a good idea for us to regroup at a picnic on a grassy knoll before we check out the performances at EMERGENCE. I will bring the blanket, plates, cups, napkins, utensils, and fruit. If everyone can bring some baguettes, cheeses, cold cuts, veggies and dip, we could have a wonderful Sunday brunch on the grass!!! We can setup, eat and catchup in time for meetup member, Erik Fabian's performance at 1:00 PM.

Creative Pioneers in Uncharted Territory

Location: Building 14 on Governors Island

FIGMENT Festival opens this weekend, marking EMERGENCE?s 4th week of its 9 week art exhibition!

New York, NY - EMERGENCE will host a series of performances, in and around Building 14, on Sunday, June 29, 2008. The event will build on the curated art exhibition?s May 31, 2008 Opening Day that coincided with Governors Island?s opening for Summer 2008. EMERGENCE is FIGMENT?s first gallery exhibition showcasing 25 artists and collectives. These site-specific installations all have participatory elements in their concepts, designs and interactions with the audience. Many of the artists are from New York City and a few of them represent the international scene from Copenhagen, Denmark; Istanbul, Turkey; and Johannesburg, South Africa

Who:

12:00 PM
?Porch Songs: Into the Shade? by Saviour Scraps. Collective will weave their colorful and highly textured textiles on looms on the front porch with participants.

01:00 PM
?No Rules? by Erik Fabian. Artist will engage the audience in a tactical game of offense and defense to save the City of New York.

02:00 PM
?Summer Homestead? by Urban Homesteading Project. Collective will collect recyclable bottles, soil, and then plant edible flora, encouraging participants to grow.

03:00 PM
?10 penny hi-top? by Friendly Falcons & Their Friend the Snake. Artist duo will call on volunteers to play an animal friendly game show.

04:00 PM
?Porthole to Draw-a-thon? by Michael Alan. Artist and team will host performance that will inspire artists and non-artists to draw from living and still sculptures.

What:
Performances throughout the day will invite audience interaction with a focus on intimate experience with artists / collectives.

When:
Exhibition is open Friday ? Sunday, June 27-29, 2008 from 11:00 AM-6:00 PM. Performances will take place on Sunday, June 29, 2008 beginning at 12:00 PM EST

Where:
Governors Island ? Noland Park ? Building 14

How to get there:
The Governors Island Ferry departs from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street, in Lower Manhattan. This is the old green building from 1908 that is immediately to the left of the Staten Island Ferry building on the East Side of Lower Manhattan. Please see the Governors Island website for more information.

The easiest way to get to the Battery Maritime Building via public transportation is by the #1 train to South Ferry Station, the 4/5 trains to Bowling Green Station, or the W/R trains to Whitehall Street Station.
