What we’re about
Watching good movies in the Austin area and hanging out before/after the screenings at bars/restaurants close to the venues.
This group's purpose is to cultivate a community of folks who share the love of Cinema.
Any attempt to define "arthouse" movies, as it usually goes with definitions, is doomed to fail. A rough demarcation, nevertheless, could do some good. I see the artistic value of a cinematic production in its conscious or unconsciousness attempt for reaching emotional/intellectual depth, to defamiliarize the familiar, to bring out some unknown to the view, to shake and enrich our existence. As such, the attempt is more important than the result and the failures valuable in one way or another.
We do not need to watch Godard backwards to count as an "arthouse movie" club, although that sounds fun. But we won't watch the 537th remake of Superman or James Bond here. Everyone else does. Let's do something more interesting.

- Event Host will wait for all the participants to converge in the lobby after the screening
- The group will proceed to the designated hangout space for the discussion.
- The Discussion:

- Each participant will share their one sentence that best captures the film. Imagine you had to pitch the film (you just watched) as an idea to some hypothetical producers, how would you summarize it in one line?
- Open-ended discussion
- Close-out and Rating: At the conclusion of the discussion, each participant will rate the film on the scale of four stars. Event Host will tally all the ratings and calculate the average rating and post it in the event's message board.

See all- RAN (remastered in 4K) - dir: Akira Kurosawa (Japan/France, 1985)AFS Cinema, Austin, TX
New 4K remaster of one of the greatest films ever made.
Akira Kurosawa’s late masterpiece RAN is an epic in the truest sense of the word. Not only was it Kurosawa’s highest budgeted film, it was the most expensive Japanese film ever made up to that point. As you would expect from Kurosawa, he uses the dramatically increased scale of the film to make something that is jaw-dropping in its effects. Kurosawa had hundreds of suits of armor and period weapons constructed and he filmed in ancient castles and even an active volcano. The story, based in part on King Lear, provides a rich emotional fabric for Kurosawa and his talented cast to work with. This is a film that must be experienced in a theater.

Long unavailable due to obscure reasons of film rights, this is perhaps the most underseen of Luis Buñuel’s great films made during his sojourn in Mexico. Here, Buñuel is unsparing in his incisive and downright dark portrayal of a man, outwardly normal, who, behind closed doors, terrorizes his inamorata. But because of the place of women in society, she has no place to turn for help. Bleak, powerful, and relevant.
