Quantum algorithms can solve certain computational problems dramatically faster than known classical algorithms. The most popular examples are integer factoring and the simulation of quantum systems. The latter has applications in quantum chemistry and condensed matter physics. Despite recent continuous progress, the implementation of practically advantageous quantum computations still faces unsolved challenges.

This talk starts with outlining some theoretical challenges, including training of variational quantum algorithms and overheads from quantum error correction. Then, some ideas to bypass these challenges for the simulation of quantum systems will be presented.
