Santa Fe
100 Portraits
Axle Contemporary and CCA
in the CCA Cinematheque Lobby Gallery
Opening reception: October 9th, 5-7 pm
Exhibition continues through December 6th After twenty years in Los Angeles working in animation as a background artist for Disney, DreamWorks, and Warner Brothers, Hye Coh moved to Santa Fe three years ago. She soon came upon a copy of Axle Contemporary's E Pluribus Unum: Santa Fe, our book containing hundreds of black and white portraits taken in 2012. As a newcomer to New Mexico, she was searching for a way to connect to the place and the people. A dedicated artist, she turned to painting. She approached Axle Contemporary to secure our permission to use material from the book. We enthusiastically agreed, and one year ago she began her project, painting 6" square oil paintings from many of the portraits in the book. In August, 2015 she completed her 100th painting in the series. She is now teaching Figure Drawing at the Santa Fe Community College, and has found a place for herself in Santa Fe's community of artists, in part through her 100 Portraits project. Axle Contemporary has teamed with Santa Fe's Center for Contemporary Arts to present the entire series of 100 portraits. The works will be available for sale as will the book, E Pluribus Unum: Santa Fe which contains all of the source material for Hye Coh's project.
Also opening the same evening at CCA's campus will be the Axle Contemporary and New Mexico School for the Arts collaboration:
