This class is about the first mark—and everything that follows. We’ll explore mark making as a freeing, empowering way to activate the surface and begin an abstract painting without overthinking or planning.
Using simple tools like brushes, markers, drips, stamps, and unexpected materials, you’ll experiment with line, texture, and movement. Marks can be bold or quiet, controlled or spontaneous, and often reflect mood, energy, and instinct. The focus is on process and decision-making—allowing the painting to unfold naturally.
We’ll start slowly: gather your materials, take a few breaths, and make the first mark. From there, let the marks stay, shift, repeat, or move beyond the edges of the canvas. This class encourages trust, curiosity, and letting the work develop one mark at a time.
