This is a out and back FITNESS HIKE that begins at the Bent Creek River Park parking lot where we will take a short connector trail to access the Mountain to Sea Trail South and onto the Sleepy Gap overlook and back, The trail has 3 moderate to strenuous climbing sections with an optional 4th climb near the turn around point at Sleepy Gap (only for those who want an additional challenge). In-between the steeper climbs are sections with mild elevation gains or losses. The return has one moderate climb with mostly mild up and down sections in between the 3 steeper downhill sections.

ELEVATION GAIN: Level 7 (elevation gain about 2100 feet).*

The trail includes an overlook of the French Broad River, distant views of the city of Asheville and opposing mountains, and a walk under rhododendron cascades. This trail is well maintained but there are some roots and rocks.

PACE: Fitness hikes proceed at a brisk pace, however we are at different levels & we may spread out a bit, so we regroup as needed. Please be capable of hiking this distance with elevation so you will not significantly delay the group. DOGS; This is a dog friendly hike as long as your dog(s) are friendly There is spring fed water on this trail at the beginning and at about 4 miles.

HIKE TIME: usually 3 1/2 hours.

*HIKE LEVELS:

Level 1 Minimal to 300 feet gain
Levels 2 to 5: from 300 feet to Level 5 (1500 feet gain).
Levels 6-9 From 1500 feet gain to 3000 feet gain.
Level 10 From 3,000 feet gain to 4000 feet gain
Ultimate Hikes ...4,000 to 6000+ feet gain.

Weather: If we have rain this hike will be canceled or rescheduled.
