Two hours of throwing plastic discs into chains in the woods, with people who don't care if you're good.
Richmond Hill Park is Asheville's largest city park (180+ acres) and its disc-golf course is fully reopened after Helene, with new baskets and refreshed tees installed during the rebuild. It's a beautiful, wooded, lightly-rolling course with views out over the French Broad. We're not playing the full 18 — we'll play a casual 9 holes in pairs, mixing experienced players with first-timers so nobody is lost or bored. Sunset is at 8:49 PM so we'll wrap with the woods going gold.
The Plan:
• 6:30 PM — Meet at the Richmond Hill Park lot (300 Richmond Hill Dr). I'll bring extra discs for anyone without one.
• 6:45 PM — Pair up (an experienced player + a first-timer per pair, when possible). Walk to hole 1 of the front 9.
• 7:00 PM — Play casually. Forget the rules. Heckle gently. Take pictures of the woods.
• 8:30 PM — Finish, regroup at the lot.
• 9:00 PM — Optional: head to Asheville Brewing Company on Merrimon Ave for a beer / pizza on your own tab.
What to Know:
• The course is free to play.
• You don't need to own a disc. I'll bring a few spares; we'll share. If you have one, bring it.
• Wear shoes you don't mind getting a little muddy. Bring water and bug spray.
• Restrooms are currently a portajohn on-site (permanent restrooms were knocked out by Helene). Drinking water is available.
Why This Event:
Disc golf in Asheville has a great course list but no recurring beginner-friendly Meetup. This is for the people who keep meaning to try it, who want a no-pressure way to be outside on a weeknight, and who like the combo of light cardio + group hang. New transplants especially welcome — it's a great way to learn one of the most-played sports in town.
