Linville Gorge - Shortoff Mt. to the Chimneys FITNESS Hike
Details
We will start at the Wolfpit trailhead and hike up Shortoff Mt. From there we follow the MST along the rim of the gorge and on to the chimneys.
It is approximately 13 miles out and back depending on where we turn around. It is about 3200' of elevation gain.
The weather is supposed to be warm and sunny on Weds. This trail gets a lot of sun so don't forget the sunscreen and bring plenty of water.
I would recommend that we carpool as much as possible. It is a bit of a drive and parking at the trailhead is limited.
If you want to carpool, meet at the Home depot on Fairview Rd. at 8:45
If you are coming from Black Mt. and want to carpool let me know and I can arrange a stop at the Ingles in Black Mt. Please, everyone indicate with a message whether you plan to carpool or not.
FYI - the posted times are for the actual hike and don't include the travel time.
Any rain cancellation will be made by 7:30am.
PACE: We keep a brisk, steady pace ( usually average around 3 mph). PLEASE BE CAPABLE OF HIKING THIS DISTANCE AND ELEVATION BEFORE SIGNING ON Thanks! We like to stay together, regrouping after more strenuous sections and at trail intersections, while respecting our distances. HIKE LEVELS are based on the total elevation gain per hike, distances vary. This is a level 10 hike.
Level (1) Up to 600 feet; Level (2) 600'- 900'; Level (3) 900' - 1200'; Level (4) 1200' - 1500'; Level (5) 1,500' - 1,800'; Level (6) 1,800' - 2,100'; Level (7) 2,100' - 2,400'; Level (8) 2,400' - 2700'; Level (9) 2700' - 3000' Level (10) 3000' - 4000'; Ultimate Hikes are > 4,000'.
