Coontree/Avery Creek Rd. 8 miles, 1500' ascent

HIKE CHANGE: Due to the closure of Yellow Gap Road, we are unable to get to the trailhead of Pilot Knob. For that reason, I have changed the hike to Coontree. Same meeting spot and same start time.
Details: A challenging climb – almost all the ascent in 3.3 miles – up the west side of Coontree Loop, then north on Bennett Gap past Coontree Mountain, through open forest, to Avery Creek Road. Returning on
Bennett Gap to an overlook with a snack break at 4.0 miles, then down the east side of Coontree Loop. Significant stretches of rough footing and rocks, but good views along the way. Multiple (dry) crossings of
Coontree Creek. Type: clockwise lollypop loop. Max elev: 3600’. Avg moving pace: 2.4 mph. Difficulty (1=effortless, 10=hard): 7 (with difficult stretches). Dogs: welcome if well-behaved and on a leash, subject to area restrictions. There is the option of going for a beer/lunch after the hikeTime: Wednesday, July 30. Meeting Place: Mills River Ingles, 3338 Boylston Hwy: Directions: I-26 Exit on NC-280 West, Airport Road---4.3 miles to the Ingles on the right. Meet in front of gas pumps, closest to Boylston Hwy. Mark's cell: 239-777-4743.
