meet/ park at the river park
WE HIKE AT A FAST PACE WITHOUT BREAKS. This is primarily a fitness oriented event. While we try to stay together as a group, we will not wait for extended periods at intersections. Sometimes a bit of trail running can even be involved. If you haven't hiked with this fitness group before and are unsure of your abilities, be prepared and know your way back to your car. If carpooling is involved please do so appropriately, or drive yourself to the trailhead.

HIKE DESCRIPTION:

Dogs Welcome. The hike is an out & back 10.5 mile LEVEL 7* fitness hike that begins at the Bent Creek river park where we take a short connector trail to the MST (Mountain to Sea Trail) South, to the Sleepy Gap overlook, and back. The out hike has 3 steep climbs and for those who desire an additional climbing challenge, a spur trail of 400+ feet elevation is available that rejoins the regular MST trail at Sleepy Gap. The return has one steep climb with mild elevation changes between the 3 steeper downhill sections. The trail parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway and includes an overlook of the French Broad River valley and opposing mountains, distant views of Asheville. Bring water and snacks - we will stop at the turnaround point for a short break so Osa can have a snack (or three).
