Chestnut Cove, MST, Cold Knob, Bent Creek

Parkway is closed. Plan B in effect. Meet @ Rice Pinnacle parking lot at 9:30 A.M. for a 7 mile loop.

I borrowed this hike from Mark Montgomery. We'll start at the Chestnut Cove overlook of the BRP and take a spur trail down to MST. Hang a left and hike west to the Pine Mtn trail. We'll hike around Cold Knob and return over the top of Cold Knob. Then is back on the MST, and we'll take a social trail (steep!) down to South Ridge road for a bit. Then it's another social trail back up to the MST and back to the overlook.

This is basically a pleasant winter walk in the woods, but it's not a beginner's hike. It's between 7 and 7.5 miles, 1,000 feet between our lowest point in Bent Creek and our highest point on Cold Knob. Walking speed is approx. 2+ mph.
