NOTE: i went ahead and switched this hike to Sunday 03 May at 10 due to weather concerns

this is about a 5 mile (maybe a bit less) loop with 1000-ish feet of elevation gain in the ranger station section of Pisgah.

the starting point is the newer gravel parking lot near Avery creek about 1.6 miles in on the forest service road leading to the stables, Twin Falls etc. just past the Bennett Gap trail. carpooling is encouraged

from the starting point, ascent to Maxwell Cove is via an unmarked trail further down the road, with an approx 1 mile climb. We then wend our way up Maxwell, past an interesting historical ruin to Pressley Gap, where the Black Mountain trail crosses. Then back down Maxwell to Pressley Cove trail, which leads back down to the parking area.

say 2 - 2.5 mph pace

gear up as appropriate, trekking poles are an option. bring a snack as we'll take a break mid-hike. and plenty of water

ground rules:

if you sign up, show up or change your status. a no-show may undercut a motivated wait-lister. (repeated no-shows will have consequences) likewise, if you're on the wait list at the time of the hike, don't presume to just show up

2 ) be sure you are in adequate physical shape to complete the event
