This is one of the most beautiful hikes along the MST in WNC. It starts in a light-filled hardwood forest and works it way up to a dark conifer forest full of spruce/fir, mosses, and ferns. Helene has cleared the top at Blackstock Knob, which offers good long-range views.

THIS IS A DARN TOUGH HIKE. It starts at 5,400 ft., climbs to 6,200 ft., descends to 5,800 ft. at Rainbow Gap, and then climbs to 6,300 ft to Blackstock Knob. It's 7 miles round trip. The first 2 miles are through the Rock Pile, after which the trails becomes a bit easier. After our break at the top, we return to the Rock Pile. Not a dog friendly hike.

THIS IS A CAR POOL. Parking is severely limited at the trail head, which is at the road up to Mt. Mitchell, NC 128. We will meet at the Folk Art Center, lower parking lot.

It takes 50-60 minutes to reach the trail head, 3 1/2 to 4 hrs. to hike, 50-60 minutes to return. Total time: 5 1/2 to 6 hrs. Speed limit on the BRP is now 35 mph.

I'm subbing for Craig. FYI.
