Bearwallow Mountain Trail Full Moon Hike - 2.1 mi. 587' g.
Details
This Full Moon, commonly known as the Buck Moon, will have an illumination of 99.8% at a distance of 248,926 miles. Current weather forecast calls for sunny skies and a low that evening around 63. Once the sun sets it may become a little chilly at 4,232' elevation so consider bringing a light jacket. The ascent is around one mile and will take us an estimated 30 minutes but it's challenging enough to elevate your heart rate. For safety purposes we will take the wide fire service road back to our cars.
We will gather at the Fresh Market on Hendersonville Rd. at 6:30 and depart at 6:45, taking the "back way" as Highway 74 is still limited to local traffic beyond Gerton. Parking can be tight at the trail head so carpooling is essential.
NOTE! Bring a head lamp or flashlight with a red lens "for emergency purposes" only. We do not use flashlights as it will be bright enough to see our way down the wide gravel road and they detract from the experience. I'll also try and remember to bring some glow sticks to attach around our ankles.
If you have night vision problems or are unstable in low light situations this hike is probably not for you.
Wear appropriate shoes, bring water, snacks, and maybe a lite blanket to sit on. Poles are optional.
Sunset is at 8:36 p:m and the Moon rises at 8:55 p:m. Plan on relaxing and enjoying this celestial event with others. We will begin to head back down around 9:15 - 9:30. I estimate getting back to our cars around 10:00 p:m.
Guests need to join Asheville Hiking Group and sign up for this hike on their own.
Being how erratic our weather has been lately, if there is a change in the forecast that necessitates canceling, I will do so by 5:00 p:m Wednesday. Only sign up if you truly plan to attend. If you must cancel, do so asap to allow any on wait list ample time. No shows = not cool.
