HIKE TO FRYINGPAN MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT TOWER

Details

Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower at 5,340' above sea level, the tallest fire tower in Western North Carolina, offers a hidden gem of panoramic views high above the Blue Ridge Parkway. The real reward comes from climbing its 70-foot height for stunning vistas of Pisgah National Forest, Looking Glass Rock, and Cold Mountain. Built in the 1940's.
We will hike approx. 4.5 miles with an elevation gain of 400 feet. It is a 360 degree gorgeous view, from UP ON THE STEEL TOWER where we will do lunch.
We will be hiking through Rhododendrons, hardwoods, some azaleas and laurels. Hiking poles are suggested as there are many roots/rocks through the first section.
Keep in mind that this is the perfect place to go with temps only in the 70's while Asheville will be 10-15 degrees hotter.
This is a more moderate hike, not flat; but we will take our time.
Bring lunch or snack and water. First part will be in the shade but the last part more sunny YET NICE AND COOL.
Just a side note: My 7 year old grandson calls it the "TOWER OF TERROR", so if you are afraid of heights we won't force you up, but that is where the views are. P.S. Grandson did it and loved it!!
We will meet at Westridge Marketplace in Candler and carpool to the starting point, driving up 151, as the Parkway is closed from Bent Creek area to Mt. Pisgah area.
Questions, please TEXT me 828-279-1664
If you sign up and change your mind please be kind and remove yourself from the list so others can come; since it is limited.
