“You see, in this world, there is one awful thing, and that is that everyone has his reasons.”
— The Rules of the Game, Jean Renoir (1939)
Cracks in society can go unseen, until eventually everything precipitates to societal collapse. Tonight we’ll discuss how cinema can serve as a mirror, revealing the architecture of power, the fabrication of consent, and the unseen forces that build up until everything changes.
From the absurd brinkmanship of Dr. Strangelove to the constructed reality of The Truman Show, from the moral rot in The White Ribbon to the satirical doomsday of Don’t Look Up, these films expose the fragile boundary between fiction and authority, spectators and captives. Are we merely watching the spectacle—or are we part of it?
Come and engage with us for a lively and convivial discussion at The Cheese Cave in Phoenix.
Cheese bites and libations will be available for purchase. This is a free event, with donations welcome to help cover operational costs. RSVP ensures we can plan seating and accommodations appropriately
