💬 Advanced ASL Social – Group Description

Welcome to the Advanced ASL Social – a space created for fluent signers (Deaf, HH, CODA, interpreters, advanced students, etc.) to connect, unwind, and chat in ASL. This is not a class, and we are not ASL teachers. 🙅‍♂️ No curriculum, no lectures, no beginner Q&A sessions — just natural conversation between people who already know the language.

We meet to:
• Practice ASL in a natural, fluent setting
• Talk about real life, vent, share stories
• Meet others who already sign and want community

⸻

🚨 Before You Join – Please Read

This space is for fluent signers. That means:
• You can carry a conversation in ASL without needing repeated clarification.
• You don’t expect the pace to slow down for you.
• You’re not here to be taught, corrected, or given one-on-one help.

If you’re still learning ASL — that’s amazing, and we support your journey! 🙌 But this may not be the right group yet. Think of this like a “book club in French” — if you can’t follow the novel, it’s not personal, it’s just not the right level.

⸻

⚠️ Common Misunderstandings
• “But I took ASL 4!” → Awesome! And yet, classroom ASL and real-world conversation are very different. That’s okay.
• “Why won’t you slow down for me?” → Because we’re not teaching. We’re just chatting.
• “Why is someone signing more than me?” → ASL is turn-taking. If you’re not sure how to jump in, watch how others do it. Deaf culture has its own rhythm.
• “I thought this was a class!” → It’s not. 🙂 And the name says “Advanced ASL Social” — we mean that.

⸻

âś… Who This Is For
• People who already sign fluently (or close to it)
• People who love ASL and Deaf culture
• People who don’t expect free lessons or demand equal talk time
• People who know how to wait their turn and hold space respectfully

⸻

🌱 Still Learning?

If you’re still learning ASL and realize this group might be too advanced right now — that’s okay! We support your growth and are happy to point you toward helpful resources.

One of the best places to start is ASL University / Lifeprint, which offers free, high-quality lessons online. You can check it out by typing:

www.lifeprint.com/asl101/lessons/lessons.htm

We can also recommend other in-person or online beginner-friendly spaces if you reach out.

⸻

We’re here for connection, not correction. If that’s your vibe too, we’re so glad you’re here. 🫶
