Unmasking Together: Conversations on Aspergers (Autism), Identity, and Connection
Many autistic adults experience the emotional exhaustion of masking, the loneliness that comes from being misunderstood, and the challenges of navigating workplaces designed around neurotypical expectations. This meetup is an opportunity to connect with others, share experiences, and support one another in a respectful and understanding environment.
Discussion Topics:
1. The Masking Exhaustion and the Loneliness of Disconnection
- What is the most exhausting part about trying to communicate with neurotypicals?
- What are the pros and cons of getting a formal diagnosis versus self-identifying, especially regarding employment, self-understanding, and cost?
- What is one thing you wish neurotypicals automatically understood about the way you communicate? How do you deal with that loneliness?
2. Disclosing Your Diagnosis and the Workplace Minefield
- Have you ever chosen to disclose your diagnosis to an employer? How did it go, and what did you learn from that choice?
- How do you handle the workplace's hidden social rules and the frustration of constantly modifying or translating your communication style?
- What would your dream autism-friendly work environment look like?
We'll begin by introducing ourselves with our name, where we're from, our work field, our special interests, and whether we are formally diagnosed or self-diagnosed. We extend extra support to those who are newly diagnosed, as we understand this can be a challenging time.
Remembering names is not necessary.
As always, no small talk is required. If you begin to feel socially or sensory overwhelmed, you're welcome to leave at any time. Simply saying, "Thanks, I have to make a move," is perfectly okay.
