Tiny Frames: Magnifying the World with a Macro Lens

Joey Terrill

Whether you’re photographing at home or halfway around the world, the capabilities of modern macro photography make it easy to create incredible images from almost any subject. In this presentation, professional photographer Joey Terrill will share subject ideas, creative solutions, and innovative techniques that will transform the small world into larger than life images. Through example pictures and detailed descriptions, Joey will share a variety of techniques that will expand and enhance your macro capabilities. He’ll discuss specialized techniques like focus stacking, high magnification, water and oil droplet photography, refined lighting, and some key techniques and tips that lead to successful macro image making. He’ll also discuss many of the tools he uses for precisely moving both camera and subject, how to control lighting measured in millimeters, sources for readily available backgrounds, and some exotic gear that makes macro captures much easier.

Fantastic Focus: A Simple Technique for Incredible Results
The fascinating images created using focus stacking are often described as "three dimensional," "hyperreal," or "extraordinary." Focus-stacked images appear razor sharp with textural quality that's usually impossible to capture in any other way. And, with the latest camera technology, focus stacking becomes nearly automatic. In this presentation. Joey will share many images that use focus stacking, discuss several gear choices that will make your captures more successful, review appropriate camera and lens settings, demonstrate with stills and video why focus stacking is very different from depth of field, discuss workflow and software options, and recommend subjects that will make your first attempt at focus stacking a success.

14:30 - 16:00
The Liquid Lens - Mixing Water, Oil, and Glass
A droplet is like a camera lens: It magnifies, focuses, and creates a new reality. When you place dozens of water droplets on a sheet of glass, a kaleidoscope of colors explode into multi-layered imagery. Change the droplet to oil, and spherical worlds emerge into infinite possibilities. In this demonstration, Joey will discuss how to choose great subjects for your droplet images, why the shape of the subject plays such an important role in the final image, how to create an inexpensive platform for droplet photography, what type of glass is best, lighting techniques to add color and shape, and how to precisely create the perfect droplet. The workshop is interactive, and Joey will answer every question throughout the session.
