Please join Association of Black Humanists in discussing the question of whether Black Humanists can or should celebrate a thinker like Voltaire.
The discussion will be led by Clive Aruede, Audrey Simmons and Ewere Owaka.
· Voltaire, was described as an emblem of Enlightenment (Jody B, August 2023). Voltaire boldly proclaimed, "I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." Jody B stated that “these words encapsulate his unwavering dedication to freedom of expression, echoing the sentiment of the renegade humanist.”
· However, Voltaire’s legacy is complex, which includes both his contributions to the Enlightenment and his problematic views on race and slavery
· Voltaire expressed derogatory opinions about Africans. He made claims that suggested Africans were inferior to Europeans
· Voltaire profited from investments in the slave trade and did not actively oppose slavery, despite being an influential Enlightenment thinker. He was involved in the exploitation of African people. Slavery is one of history's greatest moral atrocities.

Is Voltaire worthy of Black Humanists celebration? We look forward to your contributions to this discussion.
