Topic: James Webb's First Images!
Speaker: Dr. Wesley "Wes" Fraser: Research Officer, DAO; Herzberg Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics
Bio: Dr. Wesley Fraser is a Research Officer at the DAO. He studies the Solar System’s planetesimal populations, with focus on understanding the late stages of the planet formation process. Wes is co-leading a JWST program to search for the smallest Kuiper Belt Objects ever detected.
Speaker: Dr. Madeline Marshall: Plaskett Fellow, DAO; Assistant Research Officer, Herzberg Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics
Bio: Dr. Madeline Marshall is a Tasmanian astrophysicist currently working as a Plaskett Fellow at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory just outside Victoria. She studies galaxies and supermassive black holes in the early Universe using both simulations and space telescopes. Madeline is leading a JWST Cycle 1 program and is also involved in two JWST Guaranteed Time programs, which will study the first galaxies and quasars.
Abstract: The first science data from the James Webb Space Telescope will be unveiled on July 12. These example images and spectra will showcase the capabilities of Webb, highlighting each of the science themes and instruments. The targets that Webb observed for these first images are a highly kept secret, so we don’t yet know what we’ll see, but we know it will be fantastic! Wes and Madeline will showcase this first data, discussing what we’ve seen, and what’s coming next.
