SURF DOG SURF-A-THON - San Diego
Hosted by Astrophotography
Details
Surf Dog Surf-A-Thorn is happening again this year. This is a fun event to attend watching those amazing dogs compete on surfing. You will have a smiley face even if don't take any photos. But then, it's a lot of fun catching a unique moment with the dogs. They may look cute, but they are serious athletes.
Location: Del Mar Dog Beach. 8am - 2pm.
3200 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014

Parking location:
There is event parking adjacent to the beach. Tried to get there early because spaces will runs out quickly. There is a $10-$20 fee(not sure about this) to park for whole day. I believe it's cash only. There are other alternative parking in nearby streets if you want to saves a few dollars. But, you have to walk more.
Preparation:
Beach attire is highly recommended. Bring an extra set of clothes to change. A hat is a must to get shade from the sun. Bring bottle water and snacks. Suntan lotion is a (must); a beach chair and towel to rest on the beach in between competing heat. There are vendors who sell food there. My experience is to bring some snacks and go eat after the event. Wear sandals or something that allow you to walk in water because you will get wet shooting by the edge of the beach. Rogue waves do come from time to time. You will most likely get wet because of it. You can also stay on dry land and take photos. However, you will not be as close to the competition.
Equipment:
I highly recommend a longer focal length lens. 75-200mm is a minimum. 100-400mm, 150-600mm is more ideal if you have it. A Polarizer helps cut down on the glare of water. Your equipment will get sea mist. Use a damp cloth to wipe it down after you go home to keep your equipment clean from corrosive elements.
Note: There is no host due to large crowd. You can come and go anytime. You may be able to spot us by the side of the beach. I recommend finding a place on the beach to put a beach chair and towel to rest. Some shade cover is even better if you have them. Don't forget to stop and check out the competition of those athletic surf dogs. They are the stars of the show.
