Welcome to our first Meetup of 2026! Perk have kindly offered to host us for the first time to hear talks regarding event-driven software. Please note the change of venue from previous events.

Talk abstract: We need you to automate AWS cost cuts. You need to do it without write access.
Last year I worked with a FinOps startup that helps other startups reduce their AWS bills. In a crowded FinOps market, what made them special? They promised to do it without general write access to customers.
I’ll tell you how I solved this seemingly impossible task, from understanding the client’s constraints, to finding the best way to invoke actions in foreign AWS accounts, and then tracking the outcome of those actions in the client’s own service. I’ll show you what I built, what I learned, what I would do again, and what I would avoid. I’ll share what I learned, good and bad, about Systems Manager Automation, cross-account EventBridge patterns, DynamoDB as compound event aggregator, Step Functions as long-running task masters, and avoiding Lambda in favor of AWS’s more-managed services.
