James Croft: The Humanism of Ethical Culture

Putting "deed before creed," Ethical Culture has long been a leading voice for Humanism in the U.S. and abroad. Ethical Culture is an important and enduring component of the family of Humanist Communities. Many of us are unfamiliar with Ethical Culture and James Croft returns to the Humanist Association on Sunday the 8th to share more about this robust, inspirational, and amazing line of Humanist thought that should be part of our sphere of awareness and in our everyday lives.

James Croft is Outreach Director of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, one of the largest Humanist congregations in the world. In that capacity he represents the Ethical Society and Humanism in the St. Louis community and beyond, speaking on panels, giving workshops, and taking to the streets in defense of Humanist values. James holds an MA from the University of Cambridge and an EdD from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he studied Human Development. He is an in-demand public speaker, an engaging teacher, and a passionate activist for human rights. James was raised on Shakespeare, Sagan and Star Trek, and is a proud, gay Humanist.

Greg Epstein, Humanist Chaplain at Harvard and MIT, described James as “one of the most important young thinkers in the Humanist movement today, and an incredibly eloquent and entertaining speaker.” He is available to speak on Humanism and social justice, building the Humanist movement, the need for Humanist symbols and narratives, and other topics. He also offers trainings and workshops, drawing from his many years’ experience as a teacher in high school, college, and post-graduate settings.
