Ex-muslims are well aware of the high cost of non-belief. Mubarak Bala’s story is an extraordinary and powerful reminder of what it can cost to live openly as an atheist and humanist. Once imprisoned in northern Nigeria for declaring his atheism, Mubarak Bala who is the former president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, became an international symbol of courage and free expression. Against threats, persecution, and isolation, he chose to speak his mind and defend humanist values.

His frank conversation will offer a rare, firsthand account of what it means to challenge theocracy, build secular communities under pressure, and hold on to reason when everything is at stake.
