3rd Scala Meetup

Details
Dear Scala enthusiasts,
after a one and a half year pause we are back for the 3rd Athens meetup of our user group. This meetup is special, not only because after a long period of time it will bring people interested in Scala and functional programming together, but also because both of our speakers will talk about their real world experiences of working full time in Scala in companies located in Athens. So if you want to hear about Greek companies using Scala this meetup is a really good opportunity.
The Talks
"How we scaled to 50,000,000 users with Scala" by John Papadakis
How Scala helped us to provide realtime insights at scale. I will try to share our experiences from building the platform from scratch
Bio: John is co-founder of Pollfish. Pollfish is a platform that provides brands a revolutionary way to learn, communicate and interact with existing and prospective customers. Passionate about platforms and businesses that scale mainly focused on the mobile domain.
"Framework-agnostic authN/authZ for the web with higher-order functions" by Costas Kotsokalis
Managing user access (authentication/authorization) in web applications is a task with considerations spanning many areas from the HTTP layer down to storage. In this presentation we will see a way to achieve this functionality without relying on any specific web application framework, hence allowing for modularity and contributing to avoid lock-in. We will use a combination of the Proxy and the Decorator patterns, with an implementation based on higher-order functions.
Bio: Costas Kotsokalis is a developer-turned-senior-manager-turned-developer-again, with work in the academia, the industry, and his own business efforts. He discovered the joys of Scala in late 2012 and never looked back ever since. At the moment he is working to build the full product for AfterSearch, a platform for collaborative/structured decision-making. Costas has an Electrical Engineering diploma from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and a PhD in Computer Science from the Dortmund University of Technology, Germany.
