Rock the Rock - Hike Shelving Rock Summit & then Scope the Falls. (Part I)

This is Part I of a two-part meetup. You can attend only Part I or only Part II, or both. If you plan to attend both parts, please sign up for each individually.

This is one of our standby favorites every year!

Part I of this meetup is a Hike up Shelving Rock Mountain to its summit which overlooks Lake George! This is a 3.4-mile low intermediate round trip hike which we plan to do at a moderate pace.

After we return to the Parking Lot starting point area, we'll also take a short half-mile jaunt up to the beautiful Shelving Rock Falls where you can take some pics or even be bold and dip your toes in the pools at the bottom of the falls. (Water sneakers advisable if you want to climb in though)

We will meet at Parking Lot #5 on Shelving Rock Road at 9:45am and start the hike at 10:00am sharp. We will return to the parking lot by about noon, hit the falls about a half mile away on a trail, and then start Part II (Picnic, volleyball and play at Log Bay) at 1:00 p.m.

Parking Lot #5 is off of Shelving Rock Road. If you enter Shelving Rock Falls into MapQuest it should bring you to it. However, there is no internet service from the parking lot so please note and save separately the following directions in case you have any issues finding Parking Lot #5:

1. You will get off Exit 20 of the Northway and get on Buttermilk Falls Road.
2. Buttermilk Falls Road will merge into Sly Pond Road.
3. Sly Pond Road will become Shelving Rock Road. (A dirt road for a couple miles)
4. After you've been on Shelving Rock Road for a little while you will start to see Parking Lots. They are clearly labeled starting at #1. Parking lot #5 is on the left side.

It's possible that Parking Lot #5 will be full as it’s not a large trailhead. If so, you can park at Parking Lot #4 or #6 and walk there, as both are about a quarter to a half mile away.

Please wear appropriate clothing based on the weather and bring water, a snack and bug spray.
