At this retreat, we will engage in Vipassana meditation practices guided by Buddhist monastics. Vipassana is a practice of meditation that cultivates analytical skills to comprehend one's experience and being. It is a crucial skill that helps with focus, clarity, and insight. It also encourages the practitioner to drastically slow down the pace of life, allowing for closer reflection and contemplation.
This retreat is for those who wish to engage in serious Buddhist meditation and learning. There will be multiple sessions of sitting and walking meditation. Some Buddhist traditional chants and prayers will be included. These are voluntary practices for those who do not identify as Buddhists.
To help you prepare:
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Cushions and chairs are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own meditation cushion.
- A light sweater or shawl is recommended for comfort.
- Vegetarian lunch will be provided by the monastery.
Monastery Guidelines & Etiquette
As we will be guests of Kim Cang Monastery, please observe the following customary guidelines to maintain a respectful and peaceful environment for all practitioners:
- Dress Code (Modesty): Please wear loose, conservative clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. Avoid wearing tight, revealing, or transparent attire (such as shorts, short skirts, or sleeveless tops). This respect for modesty helps support the celibate monastics and maintains the focused energy of the retreat.
- Footwear: Shoes should be removed before entering the meditation hall or any shrine room. Please line them up neatly outside the door.
- Posture & Feet: When seated in the meditation hall, please do not point the soles of your feet toward the Buddha image, the altar, or the monks/nuns. In Asian cultures, the feet are considered the lowest part of the body, and pointing them is seen as disrespectful. The safest way to sit is kneeling, cross-legged, or if you are in a chair, simply keeping your feet flat on the floor.
- Silence: Please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor while inside the monastery buildings and gardens. Refrain from loud conversations, especially near the meditation hall.
- Phone Use: Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices upon arrival. Refrain from using them inside the meditation hall.
- Photography: Do not take photos of the monastics or the Buddha statues without asking for permission first.
